A letter from Zofia Potocka, née Branicka, wife of Artur Potocki, from 1848, in French, to her sister Elżbieta (Eliza) Woroncowa.
The decorative coloured vignette presents Piazza San Marco, part of Saint Mark's Square in Venice – a view from the sea. In the foreground are the Columns of Saint Mark and Saint Theodore (where executions took place), the Doge's Palace and the building of St. Mark's Library.
